Temples
Temples are usually open to visitors, though inner shrines are often reserved for worshippers. Visitors are usually asked to dress modestly, with shoulders and knees covered, and to take their shoes off where asked, usually before prayer halls. Visitors usually keep their voices down and a respectful distance from altars and offerings, and photographing people praying usually needs their permission first. Rules can vary, so please follow any instructions and ask the staff on arrival.

Most trips here go by road, with a driver or a taxi; buses cover only some routes. Airport routes are in Flights.
Metered Bluebird taxis charge what the meter shows, with a minimum fare of Rp 30,000 in Bali; tolls and parking are extra. The MyBluebird app can book one and offers a fixed-price option shown before the trip. Bluebird has a desk outside arrivals at the airport with a fixed rate to your hotel, so confirm the price before you go. Having some rupiah in cash helps with street taxis.
If you drive or ride yourself, carry your home licence and an International Driving Permit that is appropriate to the vehicle, for a car and for a scooter alike, and wear a helmet on a scooter. A 125cc automatic scooter usually rents for about Rp 85,000 a day, but few street rental shops carry insurance, so check what the price includes.

Trans Metro Dewata is the island's public city bus in the Denpasar area. It runs six corridors between places such as Kuta, the airport road, Sanur, Ubud's Monkey Forest car park, Nusa Dua and Denpasar's bus terminal, for one flat fare per trip. You pay on board with a QRIS code from your banking app, or with a tap from an NFC phone.

Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted in hotels, shops and restaurants in visitor areas, though some smaller places add a surcharge of about 3 percent. Warungs, markets and small shops are often cash-only, so keep some rupiah in small notes.
ATMs run by banks are usually cheaper than stand-alone machines, though many banks also charge foreign cards a fee. If asked, choose to be charged in Indonesian Rupiah. Your own bank may also charge a foreign-use fee. Check with your bank before you go.
Tipping is not required in Bali. Many restaurants add a service charge and a regional tax to the bill, and then no extra tip is needed; otherwise rounding up or leaving 5 to 10 percent in cash is usual, and about IDR 50,000 to 100,000 a day for a private driver.

Quick answers to common questions.
Most visitors plan a week or more and split it between two or three bases, because the roads between them are slow. Allow about 90 to 180 minutes for Tanah Lot, 60 to 120 minutes for the Tegallalang rice terraces and 60 to 120 minutes for the Sacred Monkey Forest, plus a full day for the temples and waterfalls of the uplands. Nusa Penida and the Gili Islands each need a separate day. As of 25 Oct 2026.
The dry season runs roughly from April to October, with July and August usually the busiest months and February and March among the quietest of those read in the latest arrival figures. The rainy season brings showers and humid days but also green rice fields and fewer visitors. Nyepi, the Day of Silence in March, closes the island for a day, so check it before you book. As of 25 Oct 2026.
There is no train, so the usual choices are the airport taxi counter, a ride-app car or a pre-booked driver. By road, Kuta, Legian and Seminyak are about 11 minutes from the airport, Sanur about 19 minutes and Ubud about 36 minutes in free-flowing traffic, and traffic can add a lot to that. Check the price on the counter board before you pay. As of 25 Oct 2026.
The Trans Metro Dewata bus network runs on a few corridors in the south and centre, with a flat adult fare of IDR 4,400 per trip that you can pay by scanning a QRIS code or with a prepaid bank card. It does not reach most beaches, temples or waterfalls, so most visitors also use taxis, ride apps or a driver. Tourist shuttle buses link the main towns on fixed routes. As of 25 Oct 2026.
Tipping is appreciated but not required. Many restaurant bills already add a service charge and regional tax, and if so no further tip is expected. Where there is none, visitors often leave about 5 to 10 percent, and drivers and guides are often given a small extra at the end of the day. As of 25 Oct 2026.
Cards are widely accepted in hotels, restaurants and shops in the tourist areas, but small warungs, markets, temple ticket desks and many drivers want cash in rupiah. For cash machines, those inside bank branches or at the airport are a simple choice, and if a machine offers to charge you in your home currency, choose rupiah. As of 25 Oct 2026.
Yes. Foreign visitors pay a one-off Bali tourist levy of IDR 150,000 for each foreign visitor per visit, which can be paid online before arrival or at the airport and port counters. Keep the voucher with its QR code, because it can be checked. Hotels may also add their own regional tax to the bill. As of 25 Oct 2026.
Fast boats to Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan and the Gili Islands run on set schedules and are worth booking ahead in busy months. A private driver for the uplands is easiest to arrange before the day, and the tourist levy and arrival form are completed before you land. Popular sunrise treks and temple ceremonies also work better with a plan made a day or two earlier. As of 25 Oct 2026.
Indonesia uses 230 V at 50 Hz, with plug types C and F, the two-round-pin sockets. Many phone and laptop chargers accept this voltage, but visitors from countries with different sockets will need a plug adapter. Check the label on each charger: if it lists a range that includes this voltage, only the plug shape needs changing. As of 25 Oct 2026.
In the tourist areas, hotels, restaurants, tour desks and many drivers use English. The latest EF English Proficiency Index ranks Indonesia number 80 of 123 countries and regions, and Denpasar scores 477, where a higher score means stronger English. A few words of Indonesian are always welcome, and the phrases section lists some. As of 25 Oct 2026.
Costs depend mostly on where you stay and how you travel. Many temples, beaches and village walks are free to enter, while entry for an adult costs IDR 75,000 at Tanah Lot, IDR 130,000 at the Sacred Monkey Forest and IDR 75,000 at the Jatiluwih rice terraces, and a single bus ride costs IDR 4,400. Prices change, so check each place. As of 25 Oct 2026.
Distances are long and traffic is slow, so most visitors hire a driver by the day, use ride apps such as Grab and Gojek, take Bluebird taxis or rent a scooter if they hold the right licence. Bluebird taxis run on the meter with a minimum fare of IDR 30,000, and the Trans Metro Dewata bus costs IDR 4,400 per trip on a few corridors. As of 25 Oct 2026.
The beaches, the Campuhan Ridge Walk and many village lanes and rice-field paths are open public space. Walking through Ubud's centre costs nothing, and temples often take a donation or a small fee at the gate, so check each place before you go. As of 25 Oct 2026.
Nusa Penida is about 30 to 45 minutes by fast boat from Sanur, and Nusa Lembongan about 30 to 45 minutes. The Gili Islands are about 90 minutes by boat from Padang Bai, Lovina is 70 minutes or more by road and West Bali National Park 105 minutes or more. Each trip takes most of a day. As of 25 Oct 2026.
Cover your knees and shoulders. Most temples ask visitors to wear a sarong and a sash, and many lend or rent them at the gate for a donation or include them in the ticket. Some inner areas are kept for worship, so follow the signs and the staff. As of 25 Oct 2026.
Grab and Gojek both work for cars and motorbikes, MyBluebird books metered Bluebird taxis, and inDrive is also used. Airport pick-ups for ride-app cars are usually from a lounge in the car park, and some villages limit app pick-ups, so a driver may ask you to walk a short way. Compare the app price with the taxi counter before you choose. As of 25 Oct 2026.
Nyepi is the Balinese Day of Silence, held in March. For about a day the island stands still: the airport closes, shops and restaurants shut, roads are empty and visitors stay at their accommodation. Hotels stay open for guests. Plan your arrival and departure around it, and see the events list for the date. As of 25 Oct 2026.
Three days give a first look at Ubud, the rice terraces and temples, and the Bukit cliffs, with one area a day because the roads are slow. Tirta Empul usually takes 60 to 120 minutes and Uluwatu Temple 60 to 120 minutes. As of 30 Oct 2026.
The first day stays in Ubud around Campuhan Ridge Walk, Ubud Palace, Ubud Art Market and the Sacred Monkey Forest. The second visits Tegallalang Rice Terraces, Gunung Kawi, Tirta Empul and Tukad Cepung Waterfall, and the third goes to Jimbaran Beach, Padang Padang Beach and Uluwatu Temple. As of 30 Oct 2026.
Entry costs are modest: the Sacred Monkey Forest charges IDR 130,000 for an adult, most other stops show a fee to check on arrival, and the beaches and the ridge walk have no ticket. The Plan at a glance box shows the entry total. There is no transit pass, so taxis, ride apps or a rented scooter are extra. As of 30 Oct 2026.
First time? We suggest for the sights.

Ubud is the cultural heart of the island, set among rice terraces and river gorges in the central uplands.

Kuta, Legian and Seminyak share one long west-facing beach just north of the airport.

Bedugul and Munduk lie in the cooler north-central highlands, among crater lakes, forest, coffee farms and waterfalls.

Candi Dasa and East Bali are a quieter stretch of coast and hill country beneath Mount Agung.

Uluwatu and the Bukit peninsula sit on a dry limestone plateau at the southern tip of Bali.

Canggu is a former farming district on the west coast that is now known for surf breaks, cafes and lanes through the rice fields.

Nusa Dua is a planned resort area on the Bukit's east coast, with calm reef-sheltered water, landscaped paths and large hotels.

Sanur is the older beach town on the south-east coast, with a long paved seafront path, shallow calm water and a village feel.
