The route is set, but water rooms and gardens invite a slower pace.
Early slots and weekdays tend to be calmer; water can reach above the knee, so wear trousers you can roll up.
Tickets are not sold at the venue, but official Ticket Store bookings can usually be changed a few times.
After leaving shoes in a locker, wade through a dark corridor of flowing water. Sink into a soft floor that shifts under your feet, then step into an infinite room of hanging lights reflected in mirrors. A shallow pool shows koi that scatter like brushstrokes as you walk. Outside, the garden areas include a floating flower garden and a moss garden with glowing ovoids.
In Toyosu by Tokyo Bay, a few minutes' walk from the driverless waterfront train; a subway also serves it.
Step-free accessWheelchair users are asked to transfer to the museum's own standard wheelchair at entry (limited number); own wheelchairs need tyre covers; senior carts and fast electric wheelchairs must be swapped; some artworks (mirrored floors, water-walking areas) may only be viewed from set areas or by a detour route; guests needing mobility help are asked to bring a companion. The venue does not describe the route as step-free.
Tickets are sold in advance only, not at the venue, and each one shows an admission time to queue at, as of Oct 2026. Official Ticket Store bookings can be changed a limited number of times. The Book box on this page shows partner tickets and current prices.
On a Friday it is usually open 8:00 AM–10:00 PM, with last entry 9:00 PM, as of Oct 2026. The museum lists a few dated closures on its own site, so check it before choosing a date. Evening slots work well after a day around the bay.
Many visitors allow about 2 h. Wading through the water rooms and lingering in the garden spaces takes longer than it looks. Leaving shoes in a locker at the start and collecting them at the end also adds a little time to the set route.
Visitors walk barefoot through shallow water and rooms where light and images respond to people, plus garden areas added as the museum grew. Free lockers past the gate hold bags while you go through the artworks. Mirrored floors make trousers a more practical choice than skirts.
Every ticket carries an admission time, so you queue only at your own slot rather than buying at the door. Since tickets are not sold on site, booking ahead is the only way in. The Tours section on this page lists guided options in Tokyo.
