Temples
Temples are usually open to visitors, though inner shrines are often reserved for worshippers. Visitors are usually asked to dress modestly, with shoulders and knees covered, and to take their shoes off where asked, usually before prayer halls. Visitors usually keep their voices down and a respectful distance from altars and offerings, and photographing people praying usually needs their permission first. Rules can vary, so please follow any instructions and ask the staff on arrival.

Dec · Jan · Feb
Tokyo winters are usually cold but dry and often sunny, with short days and only occasional snow. It is the season for New Year shrine visits and for city illuminations that often run on into February. Many businesses close for the first days of January.
Mar · Apr · May
Spring warms up through March into pleasant, mild weather, and cherry blossoms usually appear around late March to early April. Showers and windy days happen, and the Golden Week holidays at the end of April and early May bring crowds and busy transport.
Jun · Jul · Aug
Summer starts with the rainy season, usually from early June to around the middle of July, with many grey, humid days. Then it turns hot and very humid, with sudden heavy showers and strong sun, and typhoons can begin to approach by August. Fireworks, festivals and Obon-season events fill the calendar.
Sep · Oct · Nov
Early autumn can stay hot and wet, and September is one of the rainier months, with typhoons possible into October. By October and November the air turns mild and drier, and ginkgo and maple colours usually peak from mid-November into December. It is a busy season for events and for visitors.

Quick answers to common questions.
Spring and autumn are usually the most comfortable seasons in Tokyo. Cherry blossom usually appears from late March into early April, and autumn leaf colour usually peaks from mid-November into December. Summer is hot and humid, with the rainy season from early June to around the middle of July and typhoons possible in late summer, while winter is cold, dry and often sunny. As of 11 Oct 2026.
Japan uses the yen (JPY). Cards are widely accepted at hotels, department stores, large shops and many chain restaurants, and phone or transit-card payments are common. Many small restaurants, temples and local shops are still cash-only, so carry some yen. As of 11 Oct 2026.
A single subway or train ride in the city typically costs a few hundred yen, depending on distance, and tapping a prepaid transit card is the usual way to pay. The Tokyo Subway Ticket for visitors costs ¥1,000 for one day, ¥1,500 for two days or ¥2,000 for three days on Tokyo Metro and Toei subway lines. Check the current options and where to buy them before you go. As of 11 Oct 2026.
From Narita, the Keisei Skyliner runs direct to Ueno and costs ¥2,465 for the Ueno route, while other routes to the city take longer and cost more, for example ¥2,659 to Shinjuku with a change at Nippori. From Haneda, the Keikyu line or the Tokyo Monorail usually reaches central Tokyo without a long journey. As of 11 Oct 2026.
Tipping is usually not expected in restaurants, taxis or hotels in Japan. Menu prices are normally shown with tax included, though a few restaurants add a seating or table charge. As of 11 Oct 2026.
Three days covers a first round of the main areas at a comfortable pace, and a week allows slower days, museums and a day trip. Large sights take time: Senso-ji usually takes about 45 to 75 minutes, Meiji Jingu about 60 to 120 minutes and a major museum about 120 to 180 minutes. Planning around two main sights a day is realistic. As of 11 Oct 2026.
Tokyo can be done on a modest budget. Our research puts a plausible budget day at roughly ¥1,923 for food and local transport, and a more comfortable day at around ¥5,111, before sights and a place to stay. A small accommodation tax per person per night applies to stays at the higher room rates, and it is due to change to a percentage of the room rate, so check the Tokyo Metropolitan Government's current rules before you book. As of 11 Oct 2026.
Trains and subways are usually the easiest way to move around Tokyo. A prepaid transit card such as TOURIST PASMO or Mobile PASMO lets you tap in at the gate, and taxis start at 500 yen for the first kilometre. English signs and announcements are common at larger stations. As of 11 Oct 2026.
Yes. A free shuttle bus links all three terminals, usually about every 4 minutes by day and with no booking needed, from early morning to after midnight. Passengers connecting to or from an international flight can also ask at an information counter for a free train ticket between terminals. The Tokyo Monorail runs from every terminal into central Tokyo. Minimum connection times depend on your airline and ticket type, so check with your airline. As of 14 Oct 2026.
