A layover in Mexico City can cover three big sights in one compact route. The plan starts at Chapultepec Park, moves to the Palace of Fine Arts and ends at the Zócalo, the main square of the historic centre. The Metrobús airport line runs to Paseo de la Reforma, so the route suits long daytime layovers.

One card for most rides on public transport. Airport routes are in Flights.
A reusable plastic card that pays for the Metro, Metrobús, Cablebús, Tren Ligero and other city transport. You buy the card once, add balance, and touch it on the reader at each entrance. It is also the card the airport Metrobús service takes, and changing between Metro lines inside the system costs nothing extra.
Per person, paid locally · as of October 2026
Street taxis run on a meter at a published tariff made of a start charge plus a charge for each stretch of distance or waiting time. Site taxis and radio taxis, booked by phone or from a stand, are priced on higher tariffs. Airport taxis are quoted by zone by the companies authorised at the airport, so it helps to ask the price before you set off.

Cards are accepted in most shops, hotels and larger restaurants. Cash is still widely used at markets, street stalls and small places, and some businesses add a surcharge for card payments.
ATMs run by banks are usually cheaper than stand-alone machines, though many banks also charge foreign cards a fee. If asked, choose to be charged in Mexican Peso. Your own bank may also charge a foreign-use fee. Check with your bank before you go.
Tipping is customary in Mexico City. In a sit-down restaurant about 10 to 15 percent in cash is usual if a service charge is not already on the bill, and for a taxi it is common to round the fare up.

The layover plan visits Chapultepec Park, the Palace of Fine Arts and the Zócalo. Chapultepec Park usually takes 90 to 240 minutes, so on a shorter layover keep the park brief and give the time to the historic centre. As of 1 Nov 2026.
Allow most of a day between flights. The time has to cover the airport on both ends, the trip into the city and back, which usually takes 45 to 75 minutes each way by the Metrobús airport line, and a few hours in the city. As of 1 Nov 2026.

| March | 24° | 7° | 7 days |

| May | 25° | 11° | 13 days |
| May tends to be the hottest month of the year, and the dry season is coming to an end. Mornings are the most comfortable time for walking, and rain becomes more likely as the summer months approach. | |||
| June | 23° | 12° | 19 days |
| June brings the start of the rainy season, usually as heavy showers in the afternoon that pass within a couple of hours. A flower fair in the San Ángel district and the Pride march at the end of the month are the main events. | |||

| August is another rainy month, with showers most afternoons and fresh, green parks. Many visitors fit sightseeing into the mornings and spend the afternoons in museums or covered markets. | |||
| September | 21° | 11° | 22 days |
| September is still wet, but the festive mood takes over on the night of 15 September, when crowds fill the Zócalo for the Cry of Independence. A military parade follows on 16 September, and many shops and sights close or shorten their hours that day. | |||
| October | 21° | 9° | 14 days |
| October is when the autumn calendar fills up, with the book fair, giant alebrije figures, the catrina procession and the first Day of the Dead decorations. Spring and autumn are described as avoiding the extremes of cold and rain, so it is a comfortable month for walking. | |||
| November | 20° | 7° | 7 days |
| November is mild, with cooler evenings. The Day of the Dead festivities peak on 1 and 2 November, a mid-month public holiday makes a long weekend, and a large music festival often fills a weekend in the second half of the month. | |||
