Churches
Churches are usually open to visitors outside services, and some areas may close while a service is on. Visitors are usually asked to dress modestly, with shoulders and knees covered, and to keep their voices down. Photography rules usually vary, and flash is often not allowed. Rules can vary, so please follow any instructions and ask the staff on arrival.

One card for most rides on public transport. Airport routes are in Flights.
A one-journey ticket for the city buses and the tram lines, which also counts on regional trains between the Florence stations. Once you validate or activate it, it stays valid for a set time in Florence, so you can change vehicles within that window. One ticket serves one person.
Per person, paid locally · as of October 2026
Taxis in Florence run on a meter at a published city tariff, with a fixed fare for trips between the airport and the central area. Taxis are found at ranks or booked by phone or app, and a booking made ahead is only a request, so a taxi may not arrive exactly on time.

Cards are widely accepted in Rome, and Visa and Mastercard work in most shops and restaurants. Small and family-run places sometimes prefer cash or have a card machine that is not working, and American Express is less common, so keep a little cash with you.
ATMs run by banks are usually cheaper than stand-alone machines, though many banks also charge foreign cards a fee. If asked, choose to be charged in Euro. Your own bank may also charge a foreign-use fee. Check with your bank before you go.
Tipping is optional in Italy, because service is often already built into prices. Many restaurants add a coperto, a flat cover charge of a euro or two per person that is not a tip for the staff; for good service people usually round up the bill or leave about 5-10%, and taxi riders round up the fare.
Piazza della Signoria & Uffizi
Seasons, weather, and the events and holidays that change opening hours, crowds and prices.
Quick answers to common questions.
Plan on a few days for the main sights. Allow about 120 to 180 minutes for the Uffizi, 60 to 90 minutes for the Accademia and 120 to 180 minutes for the Pitti Palace, plus time to wander the old streets and the Oltrarno. Siena, Pisa and Lucca each need a separate day. As of 28 Oct 2026.
It depends on what you want from the trip. Florence has a mild inland climate with cool, damp winters, a warm and bright spring, hot sunny summers and an autumn that is usually the wettest season. Because the city sits in a valley rather than on the coast, summer afternoons feel noticeably hotter than at the seaside and winter nights can turn frosty. Check the opening notices of the museums you want before you book. As of 28 Oct 2026.
The tram from the airport stop, Peretola Aeroporto, is a simple link: it takes about 20 minutes to reach the stop by Santa Maria Novella station and a single ticket costs EUR 2. A taxi has a fixed fare of EUR 28 on weekdays to the central area, plus a small charge for each extra bag. The tram has no space for luggage, so travel light if you can. As of 28 Oct 2026.
City buses and the tram share one fare: a single ticket costs EUR 2 and is valid for 90 minutes in Florence, while a ten-journey book costs EUR 18.20. A ticket from the driver costs EUR 3, so carry small change, or tap a contactless bank card, phone or watch on the vehicle, one card per passenger. Tickets are also sold at tram-stop machines, ticket offices and authorised shops. As of 28 Oct 2026.
Many central sights are close enough to walk between, and the city buses and the tram cover the rest. A single ticket costs EUR 2, and trains link Florence with other towns. Taxis run on the meter and can be called by phone, found at ranks or booked through apps such as Taxi Move and appTaxi; Uber also lists Florence. As of 28 Oct 2026.
Yes. The Firenze Card is a museum card, sold from EUR 85. It lasts 72 hours from your first museum entry and gives one visit to each museum in its circuit. The operator does not list public transport as included, so you still need a bus and tram ticket. A paid extension called Restart adds more time after the card expires. Compare the total of the tickets you plan to use before you buy. As of 28 Oct 2026.
Taxi fares follow a published tariff. A short ride on a weekday in the daytime typically comes to about EUR 6 on the meter, with a per-kilometre rate of EUR 1.10 in the lower bands, and each bag adds EUR 1.20. The rates are higher at night and on holidays. The airport run to the central area has a fixed fare of EUR 28 on weekdays. As of 28 Oct 2026.
Tipping is not expected, because a service charge is often included. Most visitors round up the bill or leave around 5 to 10 percent for good service. Many sit-down restaurants add a cover charge called coperto, a fixed amount per person for sitting down, which is not a tip; two restaurants we read printed 3 and 2.5 euros per person. Look at the bill before you add anything. As of 28 Oct 2026.
Cards are widely accepted in shops, restaurants and hotels, and city buses and trams sell tickets for contactless payment on board. A little cash is still useful for small purchases and family-run places. For cash machines, those inside bank branches are usually the better choice, because other machines often charge their own fee, typically about 2 to 5 euros. If a machine offers to charge you in your home currency, choose euros. Your own bank may also charge a foreign transaction fee, so check its terms before you travel. As of 28 Oct 2026.
Yes. Guests pay a tourist tax per person per night, collected by the accommodation, and the rate depends on the type of stay: for example a three-star hotel, a guesthouse or a holiday flat is charged EUR 6. It applies for up to 7 consecutive nights, and young children are exempt. Check whether your booking price already includes it, because it is often listed separately. As of 28 Oct 2026.
The Uffizi sells named, personal tickets, and the operator lists a different price for tickets bought before the day, so check its page. The Accademia says booking is suggested. The Brancacci Chapel also uses timed entry, and booking is strongly recommended there. Popular slots can fill, so reserve early for the dates you care about. As of 28 Oct 2026.
Italy uses 230 V at 50 Hz, with plug types C, F and L, which use round pins. Many phone and laptop chargers accept this voltage, but visitors from countries with different sockets will need a plug adapter. Check the label on each charger: if it lists a voltage range that includes this one, only the plug shape needs changing. As of 28 Oct 2026.
Italian is the everyday language. The latest EF English Proficiency Index ranks Italy number 59 of 123 countries and regions and gives Florence city a score of 540, where a higher score means stronger English. Staff at sights and hotels are often used to visitors. A few words of Italian are always appreciated, and the phrases section lists some. As of 28 Oct 2026.
Much of the old centre costs nothing to enjoy on foot, including the squares and the bridges. The main costs are tickets, meals and the room. For an adult, the Uffizi costs EUR 25, the Accademia EUR 20 and the Palazzo Vecchio EUR 18, while the Firenze Card costs EUR 85. Our own typical day for food and local transport, without sights, comes to about EUR 35.32 on a budget and EUR 47.73 at mid-range. Prices change, so check each place. As of 28 Oct 2026.
Walking is the main free pleasure: the Ponte Vecchio, the Piazza della Signoria, the Piazza del Duomo, the Piazza Santo Spirito and the Piazzale Michelangelo are all open public space. Entry to the church of San Miniato al Monte is free, as is the Rose Garden on the hillside. Some museums are free on set days, so check each page before you go. As of 28 Oct 2026.
Pisa is about 51 to 89 minutes by regional train from Firenze Santa Maria Novella, Lucca about 73 to 106 minutes and Siena about 87 to 98 minutes. San Gimignano takes about 85 to 145 minutes by train and bus, and the Cinque Terre about 154 to 178 minutes by train with a change. Each trip usually takes most of a day. As of 28 Oct 2026.
Tickets are named and personal. A regular adult ticket bought on the day costs EUR 25, and the operator lists a higher price for the same ticket bought before the day, so compare its ticket pages. Backpacks, bags and umbrellas must be left in the free cloakroom. Rooms can close for works, so read the operator's notices before you go. As of 28 Oct 2026.
Churches are working places of worship, so dress modestly. At Santa Croce shoulders and knees must be covered, and the ticket office hands out disposable cover-ups free of charge. San Lorenzo and Ognissanti also ask for appropriate or modest dress, and Santo Spirito asks for clothing suitable for a place of worship. Visits can pause during services. As of 28 Oct 2026.
A short stop is usually practical because the airport tram reaches the stop by Santa Maria Novella station in about 20 minutes. From the airport to the Duomo area takes around 33 minutes including a walk, and to the Piazza della Signoria and the Uffizi about 37 minutes. A single ticket costs EUR 2. Allow time for the return trip and your airport checks. As of 28 Oct 2026.
Average highAverage lowRainy days
Typical, based on past years. Not a forecast.
| Month | Average high | Average low | Rainy days |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | 8° | 2° | 11 days |
| January is the coolest month, damp and often grey, with short days and the odd foggy morning. It is typically a quiet time for the big museums once the festive period ends, though 6 January is a public holiday with a historic procession by the cathedral that day in recent years, and the Pitti Immagine Uomo menswear fair at the Fortezza da Basso (12 to 15 January 2027) fills hotels. | |||
| February | 10° | 2° | 10 days |
| February stays cool and often damp, with the light slowly returning. It is usually one of the calmer months, with fewer day-trippers at the main sights and lower hotel demand than in spring. | |||
| March | 13° | 5° | 10 days |
| March is unsettled, swinging between mild sunny days and cool rainy ones, so layers and an umbrella are useful. The Florentine New Year on 25 March is marked by a historic procession to Santissima Annunziata, and Easter Sunday falls on 28 March in 2027, with the Scoppio del Carro in Piazza del Duomo and busier sights over the holiday weekend. | |||
| April | 17° | 8° | 12 days |
| April mixes showers with sunny spells while temperatures climb, and it is one of the wetter spring months. The Maggio Musicale Fiorentino festival usually opens in the second half of April, and the MIDA craft fair at the Fortezza da Basso has typically run from late April into early May. | |||
| May | 21° | 12° | 10 days |
| May is one of the most pleasant months, with long bright days, warm afternoons and only light showers. Visitor numbers rise before the summer peak, and the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino festival is under way in the evenings. | |||
| June | 26° | 15° | 8 days |
| June is warm and sunny with occasional thunderstorms, and the heat builds towards the end of the month. Peak season begins around mid-June, the Calcio Storico tournament is played in Piazza Santa Croce, and the San Giovanni celebrations on 24 June end with fireworks over the river. | |||
| July | 29° | 18° | 4 days |
| July is hot, bright and the driest month in the climate averages, and the stone streets hold the heat well into the evening. Queues at the big sights are long, so early mornings and evenings are the more comfortable times to be out. | |||
| August | 29° | 18° | 6 days |
| August is the hottest month, with strong sun and warm nights. Around the 15 August holiday (Ferragosto) many shops and restaurants close for a week or two, so the centre can feel quieter in places even while the main sights stay busy. | |||
| September | 24° | 14° | 9 days |
| September starts warm and bright, then evenings cool and a few showers return. Peak season eases from mid-month, the Rificolona lantern procession for children takes place on 7 September, and the Artigianato e Palazzo craft event is set for 17 to 19 September 2027 at Giardino Corsini. | |||
| October | 19° | 11° | 12 days |
| October is mild but damper and more humid, with rain becoming more frequent as the month goes on. Crowds are lighter than in summer, the city marks the Feast of Santa Reparata on 8 October with a historic procession to the cathedral, and 4 October became a national holiday in 2026. | |||
| November | 13° | 7° | 14 days |
| November is the wettest and dullest month, with damp, short days and low cloud. The Christmas market in Piazza Santa Croce opens in mid-November (from 14 November in 2026), and the Firenze Marathon on the last Sunday of the month (29 November 2026) closes roads around the route and the cathedral square. | |||
| December | 9° | 3° | 13 days |
| December is mild but damp and cloudy, with the shortest days of the year. The Christmas market runs until about 20 December in 2026, the trees and light projections go up in early December, and Christmas is a busy period, so booking ahead is sensible. | |||
Mar · Apr · May
Spring brings longer days and mild weather that grows steadily more pleasant, though March and early April can be unsettled with showers. Easter, the Scoppio del Carro and the Maggio Musicale festival fill the calendar, and visitor numbers build towards early summer.
Jun · Jul · Aug
Summer is hot and sunny, with July the driest month in the climate averages and the occasional afternoon storm. June to mid-September is peak season with long queues at the big sights, and many shops and restaurants close for a stretch around mid-August.
Sep · Oct · Nov
Autumn starts warm and bright, then turns damper, and it is the wettest season of the year, with November usually the wettest month. September has the Rificolona lantern procession, and from mid-November the Christmas market takes over Piazza Santa Croce.
Dec · Jan · Feb
Winter is mild but damp and cloudy, with short days, some morning fog and frosty nights now and then. Crowds are lighter after the Christmas period, which makes January and February a quiet time for the museums.
Coming up in the next 12 months. to see what falls during your trip.
A free-to-enter market with crafts and food stalls. Weekends and evenings are the busiest times.
Roads on the route are closed for much of the morning, so plan walking routes and buses around it. Cheering from the side is free.
It falls on a Tuesday in 2026 and often starts a long weekend, so the centre is usually busy. Check each venue's own page for holiday hours.
