Room sizes are modest, but the collection rewards an unhurried pace.
Weekday mornings and late afternoons are often quieter; spring and summer are the busiest months in El Born.
Look at the buildings as well as the art: Gothic palaces with inner courtyards and sweeping stairs.
The route starts with drawings and portraits from his school years in Málaga and A Coruña, then his arrival in Barcelona. Rooms on the Blue Period show his shift towards a sombre, personal style. A highlight is the large series of variations on Velázquez's Las Meninas, with doves painted at the same time. Ceramics he gave the museum close the visit. Stone courtyards and staircases link the palaces.
On Carrer de Montcada in El Born, a short walk from Santa Maria del Mar; the metro stops a few streets away.
Tickets are sold online, where they cost a little less, and at the museum's own ticket office, as of Oct 2026. You can choose the collection alone or add a temporary exhibition. Partner options and up-to-date prices sit in the Book box on this page.
The museum keeps different hours at different times of year, so the hours box shows this month's, as of Nov 2026. It stays closed on Mondays, as of Oct 2026. Next special hours: 24 December 2026: 10:00-14:00. Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve bring shorter hours.
Galleries spread through a row of medieval palaces on Carrer de Montcada. They focus on Picasso's formative years in Barcelona, with key pieces from later periods and temporary exhibitions too. Works from the Blue and Rose Periods and from Cubism also appear.
Many visitors allow about 90–150 min. The rooms follow his early years in order, and a temporary show adds time. Many people also linger in the Gothic courtyards and on the grand staircases of the old palaces, and the street outside is lined with more medieval mansions.
Under-eighteens go free, and there are free-entry slots on certain days that still need a reserved time, as of Oct 2026. The museum's site lists the current ones. Without a free slot, a ticket bought online usually costs a little less than at the desk.
