Cards and contactless payments are widely accepted in shops, restaurants, taxis and on public transport. A little cash is still handy for small purchases, market stalls and family-run places.
ATMs run by banks are usually cheaper than stand-alone machines, though many banks also charge foreign cards a fee. If asked, choose to be charged in Euro. Your own bank may also charge a foreign-use fee. Check with your bank before you go.
Tipping is optional in Barcelona. In a sit-down restaurant many visitors leave a small tip in cash if service is not already included, and for a taxi it is usual to round the fare up to the next euro.

Quick answers to common questions.
Plan on a few days for the main sights. Allow about 60 to 120 minutes for the Sagrada Família, 60 to 120 minutes for Park Güell and 60 to 90 minutes for La Pedrera, plus time to wander the Gothic Quarter and the seafront. Montserrat and Sitges each need a separate day. As of 19 Oct 2026.
It depends on what you want. Hotel stays are usually highest in July and August, so those months tend to be the busiest, and lowest from December to February, with spring and autumn in between. May and October are among the busier of the in-between months. Check the dates of any festival you want to see before you book your rooms. As of 19 Oct 2026.
The metro stations at the airport terminals are the simplest link, and a ticket valid there is needed: the airport ticket costs EUR 5.90 for one metro journey, while a one-day ticket from EUR 12 includes one trip to and one from the airport. Taxis run on the meter with an airport supplement of EUR 4.60. Regional trains of the Rodalies network also link the airport with Sants and Passeig de Gràcia. As of 19 Oct 2026.
A single ticket costs EUR 2.90 for one journey on the metro and city buses, and you can tap a contactless bank card on buses. A ten-journey ticket, the T-casual, starts at EUR 13 and a one-day ticket, the T-dia, at EUR 12; the price depends on the number of zones. Cardboard cards come from machines in metro stations. As of 19 Oct 2026.
Tipping is optional. In a sit-down restaurant many visitors leave a small tip in cash, around 5 to 10 percent, if service is not already included. Nothing is needed for a coffee, and for a taxi it is usual to round the fare up to the next euro. Tips added to a card payment may not reach the staff. As of 19 Oct 2026.
Cards, phones and contactless payments are widely accepted in shops, restaurants, taxis and on public transport. Cash is still useful for small purchases, market stalls and family-run places. For cash machines, those attached to bank branches are a simple choice, and if a machine offers to charge you in your home currency, choose euros. As of 19 Oct 2026.
Yes. Visitors pay a tourist tax per person per night, collected by the accommodation. Hotels of one to three stars and most other stays charge EUR 7, while higher-rated hotels and tourist apartments charge more. It applies for a limited number of nights per stay, and young children are exempt. Check whether your booking price already includes it, because it is often listed separately. As of 19 Oct 2026.
The Sagrada Família sells tickets for fixed time slots, and the operator says they can only be bought online, so book it before you travel. Park Güell also admits visitors in time slots and recommends buying online in advance, and Casa Batlló and La Pedrera sell timed tickets as well. Late arrivals may not be admitted. As of 19 Oct 2026.
Spain uses 230 V at 50 Hz, with plug types C and F, the two-round-pin sockets. Many phone and laptop chargers accept this voltage, but visitors from countries with different sockets will need a plug adapter. Check the label on each charger: if it lists a voltage range that includes this one, only the plug shape needs changing. As of 19 Oct 2026.
Spanish and Catalan are the everyday languages of the city. The latest EF English Proficiency Index ranks Spain number 36 of 123 countries and regions and gives Barcelona city a score of 566, where a higher score means stronger English. A few words of Spanish or Catalan are always appreciated, and the phrases section lists some. As of 19 Oct 2026.

Montserrat takes about 80 to 90 minutes by train and rack railway, Tarragona about 69 minutes and Girona 79 to 101 minutes. Tarragona's Roman sites are usually closed on Mondays. Average highAverage lowRainy days
Typical, based on past years. Not a forecast.
| Month | Average high | Average low | Rainy days |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | 12° | 5° | 7 days |
| January is the coolest stretch of the year and sunshine is limited, though clear days do come between the grey ones. The Three Kings parade on the evening of 5 January fills the streets along its route, after which the city slows down and hotel stays are among the lowest of the year. | |||
| February | 13° | 6° | 7 days |
| February stays cool and on the dry side, with the sun slowly returning. Carnival and the Santa Eulàlia festivities bring parades, giants and fire runs to the old town, and outside those days it is a quiet month for hotels. | |||
| March | 15° | 8° | 7 days |
| March brings clearly more sun and the first mild days for long walks, though showers still pass through. Early in the month a mobile technology congress fills hotels near the exhibition centre, and in 2027 a city marathon on 14 March draws crowds along central avenues. | |||
| April | 17° | 10° | 9 days |
| April is bright and mostly mild with a fair number of showers, and the city's beach services usually start up between late March and mid-April. Sant Jordi on 23 April puts book and rose stalls along main streets, so those avenues are busy that day. | |||
| May | 20° | 13° | 8 days |
| May is one of the sunniest months, with comfortable days for walking and the odd shower. The beach services are running and move to their fuller summer timetable around the end of the month, while museums put on special programmes around 18 May. | |||
| June | 24° | 17° | 6 days |
| June is warm, sunny and fairly dry, a good month for the beach and for days outdoors. On the night of 23 June each neighbourhood lights its own bonfire for Sant Joan, with street parties and fireworks until dawn, and 24 June is a public holiday. | |||
| July | 27° | 20° | 5 days |
| July is the sunniest and driest month, making it the easiest time for beach days and outdoor evenings. The Grec Festival fills Montjuïc and venues around the city with theatre, dance, music and circus for about a month. | |||
| August | 27° | 21° | 7 days |
| August is hot and bright, with short, sometimes thundery bursts of rain more likely than long wet spells, and hotel stays reach their highest point of the year. Neighbourhood festivals take over the streets, with Gràcia decorating its streets in mid-August and Sants following towards the end of the month. | |||
| September | 24° | 18° | 12 days |
| September is still warm enough for the beach, but it is the start of the wetter part of the year and rain can arrive in sudden heavy spells. The Diada on 11 September and the La Mercè festival around 24 September bring large gatherings, free concerts, human towers and fire runs to the centre. | |||
| October | 20° | 14° | 11 days |
| October is the wettest month on average, so it helps to keep plans flexible, but the days are still mild and the city beach services usually run into its first days. The month ends with the Castanyada on 31 October, when roasted chestnuts and sweet treats appear around the city. | |||
| November | 16° | 9° | 9 days |
| November is cooler and greyer, with rain still frequent and sunshine thin on the ground. The Santa Llúcia Christmas market usually opens beside the cathedral in the last days of the month, and 1 November is a public holiday (a Monday in 2027). | |||
| December | 13° | 6° | 7 days |
| December has the fewest hours of sun in the year, with rain on only a few days. The Santa Llúcia fair fills the avenue in front of the cathedral until 23 December, Christmas Day is a public holiday, and New Year's Eve is celebrated with fireworks at the foot of Montjuïc. | |||
