Cards and contactless payments are widely accepted in hotels, supermarkets and larger shops and restaurants. A little cash is still handy for small cafes, market stalls and some traditional places.
ATMs run by banks are usually cheaper than stand-alone machines, though many banks also charge foreign cards a fee. If asked, choose to be charged in Euro. Your own bank may also charge a foreign-use fee. Check with your bank before you go.
Tipping is optional in Vienna. In a sit-down restaurant or cafe many visitors round up or add roughly 5 to 10 percent for good service, and for a taxi it is usual to round the fare up by a euro or two.
Innere Stadt (Old Town)
Seasons, weather, and the events and holidays that change opening hours, crowds and prices.
Quick answers to common questions.
Most first-time visitors find that three days covers the main palaces, the old town and one or two big museums at an easy pace. A fourth or fifth day leaves room for the Danube, a day trip or a slower coffee-house afternoon. Our day-by-day plans show how the sights fit together.
Spring and early autumn are usually comfortable for walking, while summer is warm and busy and winter brings Christmas markets and the ball season. Museums and coffee houses make rainy or cold days easy to fill in any month. The seasons section on this page shows what usually happens each month.
Fast trains run to Wien Hauptbahnhof, a city train runs to the centre, and Vienna Airport Lines buses serve several stops around the city for EUR 11. Taxis also run between the airport and any address in the city. Rail services have been changing because of works, so check the operator's page for the day you travel.
The old town is compact and easy to explore on foot, and the metro, trams and buses cover everything beyond it. One ticket works on all of them, and a one-day pass costs EUR 9.70 (digital). Taxis and ride apps are also available.
For a short stay the one-day ticket at EUR 9.70 (digital) or a one-week ticket is the usual choice, and a single ride costs EUR 3. The Vienna City Card combines transport with discounts at sights, so it pays off only if you plan several paid visits. As of 28 Oct 2026.
Taxis run on a meter at a published city tariff, with higher rates at night and on Sundays and a small surcharge for ordering by phone or app. One large company offers a fixed fare of EUR 42 between any address in the city and the airport. As of 28 Oct 2026.
Tipping is optional but customary in restaurants and cafes, where many visitors round up or add roughly five to ten percent for good service. Tell the server the total you want to pay, including the tip, rather than leaving coins on the table. For taxis, rounding up to the next euro or two is usual.
Cards and contactless payments are widely accepted in hotels, supermarkets and larger shops and restaurants. A little cash is still handy for small cafes, market stalls and some traditional places. Machines attached to bank branches are a simple choice for cash.
Yes, hotels and other accommodation collect an accommodation tax of 5 percent of the room price before VAT and breakfast, and it is due to rise in July of next year. It is usually added to the bill at checkout. As of 28 Oct 2026.
Some sights admit visitors by time slot or on guided tours only, such as the Kunsthistorisches Museum, the Parliament and the Rathaus tours, so it is worth reserving those in advance. Popular palace tours and concerts also sell out in busy seasons. Always check the operator's page for the date you plan to visit.
Austria uses plug types C and F with a mains voltage of 230 volts, so visitors from the UK, the US and many other countries need an adapter. Many devices accept this voltage, but check the label on yours first.
Yes, English is widely understood in hotels, museums and restaurants, and Austria ranks near the top of a global English-proficiency index. A few German greetings are still appreciated, and our phrase list on this page gives the basics.
Costs are moderate for Western Europe: a typical mid-range day for food and transport comes to about EUR 67.50 per person, before sights. Coffee-house visits and big palace tickets add up, and the Vienna City Card at EUR 19 can offset some of that if you plan several visits. As of 28 Oct 2026.
Walking the Ringstrasse, the lanes of the old town, Judenplatz and the squares costs nothing, and the courtyards of the MuseumsQuartier are open to everyone. Entry to Stephansdom for prayer and a quiet look inside is free, with charges only for towers and tours. Parks and the Danube Island are also free to enjoy.
Yes, the Vienna Woods and the Kahlenberg lookout are about 47 to 56 minutes from the main station by public transport. Hallstatt in the Salzkammergut is a much longer trip, about 206 to 236 minutes by train, so many visitors stay overnight.
The Grand Tour ticket for the palace rooms costs EUR 42 for an adult, and a shorter ticket for the State Apartments costs less. Gardens and other areas have their own tickets, and online booking for a fixed time is a reliable way to avoid queues. As of 28 Oct 2026.
Most supermarkets and shops are closed on Sundays and public holidays, so plan groceries for Saturday. Shops at the main railway stations and the airport are the usual exceptions, and most cafes, restaurants and museums stay open.
