The galleries are long and one-way, so give yourself time for the walk as well as the art.
Weekday afternoons are often calmer than mornings, and winter outside the holidays is usually quieter.
Plan for the dress code: no sleeveless or low-cut clothing, shorts above the knee, miniskirts or hats.
The Pio-Clementino rooms hold famous classical statues such as the Laocoön and the Apollo Belvedere. The Gallery of Maps stretches past painted views of Italian regions under a gilded ceiling. Next come the Raphael Rooms, with the School of Athens. The route ends in the Sistine Chapel, beneath Michelangelo's ceiling and his Last Judgement. The Pinacoteca picture gallery is worth a detour.
The entrance is on Viale Vaticano, a walk around the Vatican walls from St Peter's Square; the metro stops a short walk away.
Step-free accessThe Vatican Museums say most of their spaces are accessible to visitors with motor disabilities and recommend a barrier-free route, with wheelchairs available free from the cloakroom.
A ticket covers the Museums and the Sistine Chapel on the day it is issued, and booking online in advance adds a small fee, as of Nov 2026. The Book box on this page shows partner tickets and current prices.
On a usual Tuesday they are open 8:00 AM–8:00 PM, with last entry 6:00 PM. They are closed on Sunday, apart from the last one each month. Holiday closures: 29 November 2026: 09:00-14:00. As of Oct 2026. Halls begin to close shortly before closing time.
Many visitors allow about 2–3 h. The route is long, through galleries, courtyards and palace rooms, and it ends in the Sistine Chapel. With so much to see, many people pick a few highlights, such as the Gallery of Maps and the Raphael Rooms.
Classical sculpture, Egyptian and Etruscan antiquities, a picture gallery and modern religious art lead on to the Raphael Rooms. The visit closes in the Sistine Chapel, under Michelangelo's ceiling. On the way, the Gallery of Maps runs past painted views of Italian regions under a gilded ceiling.
Entry is free on the last Sunday of the month, with shorter hours that day, as of Oct 2026. Young children also go free, as of Nov 2026. Those free Sundays tend to be very busy, so many visitors plan for a slower, crowded route.
