The nave and crypt take a relaxed visit, and the dome climb adds a little more.
Mornings soon after opening are usually calm in the nave, and clear days give the longest views from the colonnade.
Plan two parts: the crypt with Voltaire, Hugo and Marie Curie, then the high walkway around the dome, a separate climb.
The nave is lined with large murals of Saint Genevieve, Joan of Arc and other scenes from French history. At its centre, a copy of Foucault's pendulum swings beneath the dome, showing the turning of the Earth. Stairs lead down to the crypt, where the tombs of Voltaire, Rousseau, Victor Hugo and Marie Curie lie along vaulted corridors. Higher up, a staircase climbs to the colonnade around the dome.
On the hill of Sainte-Geneviève in the Latin Quarter, uphill from the Luxembourg Garden; metro and RER stop below.
Entry is by ticket, with a rate that changes between the quieter months and the summer season, and buying online can cost a little less in summer, as of Oct 2026. For partner tickets and up-to-date prices, see the Book box on this page.
It is open every day, closing a little later from spring to early autumn, and it opens later than usual on the first Monday of each month. The hours box shows this month's times, as of Oct 2026. Last entry falls a little before closing.
Under the great nave, the crypt holds the tombs of figures such as Voltaire, Victor Hugo and Marie Curie. A staircase climbs to the colonnade around the dome, which looks out over the Left Bank. Begun as a church, it became a national resting place during the Revolution.
Many visitors allow about 1 h for the nave and the crypt. Add extra if you plan to climb to the colonnade, which is reached by a long staircase. Reading the names in the crypt, from Voltaire to Joséphine Baker, also takes longer than many expect.
