Even a short route through a few highlights takes a good part of the day.
Opening time is usually busy at the pyramid, so a later slot can feel calmer; the late evenings are often quieter.
Leave suitcases at your hotel: big bags are refused, and lockers under the Pyramid take only smaller items.
Many visits begin in the Denon wing with the Winged Victory of Samothrace at the top of a grand staircase, then the Italian paintings and the Mona Lisa. The Venus de Milo stands among the Greek sculpture nearby. In the Sully wing, the medieval moat of the first fortress survives underground, next to the Egyptian galleries. The Richelieu wing holds the apartments of Napoleon III and the covered sculpture courts.
On the Right Bank between the Tuileries and the Palais Royal; metro trains stop by the Carrousel entrance.
Entry is by paid ticket, with a lower rate for visitors from the European Economic Area and free entry for younger visitors in some groups, as of Oct 2026. Check the Book box here for partner tickets and their current prices.
Many visitors allow about 3 h, and even then see only part of it. The collection fills several wings of a former royal palace, so picking a few sections ahead of time helps. The walk between wings takes time on its own.
The galleries run from ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome to European painting and sculpture. Leonardo's Mona Lisa and the Venus de Milo draw the biggest crowds, and the glass pyramid marks the main way in. The building began as a fortress, then became a royal palace.
Yes. Entry is free for visitors under eighteen and for residents of the European Economic Area under twenty-six, as of Oct 2026. Other visitors from the European Economic Area pay a lower rate than visitors from elsewhere. The Book box on this page shows partner tickets and current prices.
