A rooftop visit is fairly short, though the stairs take a little effort.
Weekday mornings are often calmer, while sunset draws a queue. A short ceremony rekindles the flame each early evening.
The Champs-Élysées runs straight from the arch toward the Louvre, so the two pair well as one long walk.
Look first at the large sculpted groups on the pillars, including the famous Departure of the Volunteers. Beneath the arch, the tomb and its flame sit in the paving, with names of battles and generals cut into the inner walls. A spiral staircase leads to a small museum room inside the attic, then out to the rooftop terrace. From there the avenues radiate like a star, with La Défense on one side and the Louvre axis on the other.
At Place Charles de Gaulle, top of the Champs-Élysées; reach it by the underpass, never across the roundabout.
Only the rooftop terrace needs a ticket, and its rate changes with the season and is lower on some days, as of Oct 2026. It covers the staircase climb inside the arch and the terrace. Partner tickets and today's prices appear in the Book box on this page.
The terrace opens daily, staying open later in the warmer half of the year and starting later on Tuesdays. Because hours change with the season, the hours box shows this month's, as of Oct 2026. Last entry comes a little before closing, so leave time for the climb.
A staircase inside the arch leads to the rooftop platform, from which the avenues of the star-shaped square fan out, with the Champs-Élysées running toward the Louvre. Down below, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and its flame lie under the vault.
Many visitors allow about 45 min when they go up to the roof. The climb and a slow loop of the terrace take most of that. Add a few minutes at ground level for the tomb and its flame under the vault, and for the underpass from the avenue.
Yes. The area under the arch, with the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, is free and always open; only the rooftop terrace is ticketed, as of Oct 2026. The underpass from the avenue leads straight there, so you can see the flame without climbing.
