The grounds are wide and the walking adds up, so this estimate assumes regular rests in the shade.
Arrive at opening, when animals are often livelier and the heat milder; late autumn to spring is usually more comfortable.
Plan a route by region first: Asia, Africa, the Amazon and Florida are spread wide, so many visitors pick a few.
Follow the main loop through the Asian section with tigers and elephants, then on to the African plains with giraffes, rhinos and lions. The Amazon and Beyond area brings jaguars, giant otters and a large aviary. Do not miss the Florida section with native wildlife of the Everglades. Keeper talks and animal encounters may run on some days, so check the zoo's daily schedule.
The zoo sits far south of downtown, beyond Kendall. Most people drive or take a taxi; buses reach it, but slowly.
Step-free accessThe zoo's FAQ says all exhibits, concessions and transport are wheelchair accessible, and non-electric wheelchairs can be rented hourly.
General admission covers the zoo grounds, with lower rates for children and free entry for the youngest, as of Oct 2026. Tickets are sold on the zoo's own website and at the gate, with no timed entry. The Book box on this page shows partner tickets and current prices.
The zoo opens every day, usually 10:00 AM–5:00 PM, and last entry is usually 4:00 PM, as of Oct 2026. Thanksgiving Day: open 10:00-15:00 Because the grounds are so large, arriving near opening leaves time for several regions before the afternoon heat sends many families home.
Many visitors allow about 4–5 h, as of Oct 2026. The walking adds up between Asia, Africa, the Amazon and Florida, so many people pick a few regions, take breaks in the shade and skip the paths they care less about.
Zoo Miami lies in the south-west of Miami-Dade County, well south of downtown and the beaches. Most visitors arrive by car, taxi or ride-hail, and a large car park sits at the entrance. The map on this page shows the address and the nearest station, as of Oct 2026.
Animals live in open habitats grouped by region, including Asia, Africa, the Amazon and Florida, separated by moats rather than cages. Highlights include tigers and elephants, giraffes and rhinos on the African plains, and jaguars beside a large aviary. Some animals may be kept indoors in cold weather.
