The collection is long, so this estimate assumes you walk the floors in order and pause for the highlights.
Weekday mornings are usually quieter than the free windows; opening times shift during the year, as the box above shows.
The rooms run from the top floor down in date order, from early Italian painting to twentieth-century work on the ground floor.
The route is designed to run top to bottom. Begin on the upper floor with Italian and Flemish panels and early portraits, including Ghirlandaio's young woman in profile. The middle floor brings Dutch landscapes, then Impressionists such as Monet, Renoir and Degas. On the ground floor come Expressionism and the twentieth century, with Kirchner, Hopper, Lichtenstein and others. Temporary exhibitions run alongside the permanent rooms.
The museum faces the Neptune fountain on the Paseo del Prado, across from the Prado and a short walk from Puerta del Sol.
Step-free accessThe museum lists preferential access to the hall by automatic door, a lift to the upper floors, accessible toilets on every exhibition floor and free loan of wheelchairs.
Opening hours vary by weekday and change in high summer, so the hours box shows this month's, as of Oct 2026. Next special hours: 24 December 2026: 10:00-15:00. The weekly free-entry windows can be busy, so a weekday morning is usually calmer for a full visit of the collection.
Tickets can be bought online or at the museum, and no ticket is needed during the free-entry windows, as of Oct 2026. The Book box on this page shows partner tickets and current prices. Buying ahead online usually makes the start of a visit smoother.
Many visitors allow about 150–210 min for the main collection rooms, as of Oct 2026. Starting on the top floor and working down follows the paintings in order. Temporary exhibitions and a pause for coffee add more time, so many people keep the visit unhurried.
The upper floors hold the Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection, from early Italian painting to modern work, and the ground floor shows the Carmen Thyssen Collection. A lift serves the upper floors, as of Oct 2026. Impressionists such as Monet and Degas hang on the middle floor.
The museum runs free-entry windows on Monday afternoons and Saturday evenings, as of Oct 2026. During those windows no ticket needs to be bought. Young visitors, unemployed visitors and some visitors with a disability also enter free; the museum's site lists who qualifies.
