That covers the state rooms at an easy pace, with a little extra if you add the armoury.
Opening time and late afternoon tend to be calmer than late morning; hours change with the season, as the box above shows.
Leave large backpacks and suitcases behind while works continue, and enter from the esplanade facing Almudena Cathedral.
Start on the main staircase, then follow the route through the state apartments: the Hall of Columns, the Throne Room with its painted ceiling, and the richly decorated Gasparini rooms. The Royal Chapel and the Royal Pharmacy, lined with old jars, sit along the way. Finish in the Royal Armoury beside the parade ground, where suits of armour line the hall. From the Plaza de la Armería you look across to Almudena Cathedral and out over the Campo del Moro.
The palace is at the west end of the old centre, a short walk from Puerta del Sol; metro and buses stop close by.
Step-free accessThe operator says the palace is accessible for people with reduced mobility and that wheelchairs are available there.
Tickets for the self-guided route or a guided visit are sold online and at the box office, as of Oct 2026. Combined tickets add the Royal Kitchen or the Royal Collections Gallery. The Book box on this page shows partner tickets and current prices.
Many visitors allow about 1–2 h, as of Oct 2026, covering the state rooms, the Royal Armoury and the wait at the entrance. Adding the Royal Kitchen or the Royal Collections Gallery with a combined ticket stretches the visit, and a guided visit follows its own pace.
The route crosses a sequence of state rooms with painted ceilings, tapestries and royal furnishings, including the Throne Room, and the Royal Armoury sits across the courtyard. Visitors enter from the esplanade by Almudena Cathedral and are asked to leave large bags behind, as of Oct 2026.
The youngest children go free, and free hours on some weekday afternoons apply to self-guided visits for citizens and residents of the European Union and Latin American citizens with proof, as of Oct 2026. Those free tickets are sold at the box office only.
