That leaves time for Guernica and the main collection floors without rushing.
Weekday late mornings are often easier than the free evening hours; arriving soon after opening gives more room at Guernica.
With an online ticket, the museum suggests the Nouvel entrance; then cross to the Sabatini building for Guernica.
Begin on the second floor of the Sabatini building, a grand old stone block with glass lifts on the outside. Picasso's Guernica fills a room there, with his preparatory sketches beside it. The rooms around it show Dalí, Miró, Juan Gris and the surrealists. Higher up, the collection moves on to post-war and later work. Step out to the cloister garden, then cross to the red-roofed Nouvel extension for the temporary shows.
The museum stands at the south end of the Paseo del Prado, a flat walk of a few minutes from the Prado; metro and buses stop nearby.
Step-free accessThe museum states that almost all public areas have wheelchair access, with lifts between floors in both buildings; the Vaults Room is not wheelchair accessible.
Tickets can be booked online, and visits before the free hours are given a time slot, as of Oct 2026. With an online ticket the museum suggests the Nouvel entrance. The Book box on this page shows partner tickets and current prices.
It shuts each week on Tuesday. Sunday hours are usually 10:00 AM–2:30 PM, and other open days run 10:00 AM–9:00 PM, as of Oct 2026. Next special hours: 9 November 2026: closed (this date may vary). Most open days run into the evening.
Free-admission hours fall near the end of each open day, but a free ticket is still needed and those visits are for individuals only, as of Oct 2026. Young visitors, seniors and students may also qualify for free entry at the ticket office; the museum's site lists the conditions.
Many visitors allow about 2–3 h for the collection floors and one temporary exhibition, as of Oct 2026. With so many works, following a single period at a time keeps it manageable. Guernica and its preparatory sketches alone often hold people for a while.
Guernica and the surrealist rooms are in the Sabatini Building, while the Nouvel building adds exhibition halls around a courtyard. Lifts link the floors in both buildings, as of Oct 2026. The cloister garden in the Sabatini building offers a quiet pause between floors.
