A layover in Madrid can become one compact walk through the historic centre, between the train in from Barajas and the train back. It starts on Gran Vía, crosses Plaza Mayor and Puerta del Sol, then takes in the Reina Sofía Museum before finishing at Plaza de Cibeles. Expect busy squares, grand avenues and a long look at modern Spanish art.

Cards and contactless payments are widely accepted in shops, restaurants, hotels and taxis. A little cash is still handy for small purchases, market stalls and family-run places.
ATMs run by banks are usually cheaper than stand-alone machines, though many banks also charge foreign cards a fee. If asked, choose to be charged in Euro. Your own bank may also charge a foreign-use fee. Check with your bank before you go.
Tipping is optional in Spain. In a sit-down restaurant many visitors leave a small tip in cash if service is not already included, and for a taxi it is usual to round the fare up to the next euro.

Quick answers to common questions.
The layover plan is one compact walk in the centre: Gran Vía, Plaza Mayor, Puerta del Sol, the Reina Sofía Museum, the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum and Plaza de Cibeles, in that order. The Reina Sofía usually takes 120 to 180 minutes and is closed on Tuesdays, and the Thyssen 150 to 210 minutes, so one shorter museum visit may suit a tighter connection. As of 20 Oct 2026.
The layover plan already covers Gran Vía, Plaza Mayor, Puerta del Sol, the Reina Sofía Museum, the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum and Plaza de Cibeles, so a long layover can simply take each stop more slowly, or follow the one-day plan for more. For the return, a Metro single to the airport needs a supplement of EUR 3, which a tourist travel pass already covers. As of 20 Oct 2026.
