How Troovz stays freeA layover in Lisbon can fit one compact walk through the oldest part of the city, between the metro in from the airport and the metro back. Baixa is the flat, grid-planned heart of the city between Rossio square and the riverside Praça do Comércio, rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake. It is the most central base, with metro, tram and train links close by, and the old lanes of Mouraria rise just to the east.

Cards are widely accepted in Lisbon, and contactless cards and phones work at the metro gates. Traditional cafes, small restaurants, market stalls and small shops are where cash helps most, and some set a minimum for card payments, so keep a little cash with you.
ATMs run by banks are usually cheaper than stand-alone machines, though many banks also charge foreign cards a fee. If asked, choose to be charged in Euro. Your own bank may also charge a foreign-use fee. Check with your bank before you go.
Tipping is optional, because service is already included in the price. In restaurants people usually round up the bill or leave a couple of euros for good service, and nothing is expected for a coffee or pastry at the counter.

Quick answers to common questions.
Whether you can leave Lisbon airport depends on your passport, your ticket and the time between your flights. Check the visa tool on this page for your passport before you plan to go into the city, and allow for security and passport checks on the way back.
The layover plan is one compact walk between the metro in from the airport and the metro back: the Praça do Comércio, the Baixa, Lisbon Cathedral, Alfama and the Castelo de São Jorge, in that order, with a ride on Tram 28 to finish. The streets climb steadily, so comfortable shoes usually help. As of 25 Oct 2026.
If you have a full day, follow the one-day plan instead. The layover keeps to a short walk from the Praça do Comércio and the Baixa up through Alfama to the Castelo de São Jorge, while the one-day plan has room for more of the city. As of 25 Oct 2026.
