Arrive at opening on a weekday for the calmest cloister; late morning is usually busier, when tour coaches reach Belém.
Book a date and slot even with a Lisboa Card, scanned at the door; the Belém Tower is an easy walk west afterwards.
Begin at the south portal facing the river, crowded with saints and carved detail. Inside, the church of Santa Maria holds the tombs of Vasco da Gama and the poet Luís de Camões under a soaring vaulted ceiling. The cloister is the heart of the visit: walk both levels slowly to see the carved arches and corner details, then look into the old refectory and its tiled walls.
The monastery is in Belém, west of the centre by the Tagus; the tram from the Baixa, buses and local trains stop close by.
As of Oct 2026, the tourist board lists entry as booked for a chosen date and time slot. Lisboa Card holders still pick a slot and scan the card at the terminal by the door. The Book box on this page shows partner tickets and current prices.
Usual hours are 9:30 AM–5:30 PM, with last entry at 5:00 PM. The monastery shuts every Monday, as of Oct 2026. Next special hours: 25 December 2026: closed. Entry is booked for a chosen date and time, and an early slot usually brings the calmest cloister.
The church of Santa Maria holds the tombs of Vasco da Gama and the poet Luís de Camões beneath tall stone vaulting. The cloister, carved on two levels with Manueline detail, is the centrepiece. It remains a place of worship, so quiet, respectful behaviour is welcome.
In our plans: Day 1, “Castelo de São Jorge & Belém Tower”. The monastery faces the river in Belém, with the Maritime Museum in its west wing and the Belém Tower a short walk away through the waterfront gardens. The map shows all three.
Next stop: 8–10 min walk
