The foundation sells its own tickets online and at its desks, and entry is free on Sunday afternoons, as of Oct 2026.
Is it free?Entry is usually by ticket. Some visitors, and some visits at set times, may be free; the museum lists the current rules on its site.
As of Nov 2026
24 December 2026: closed; 25 December 2026: closed
Weekday mornings are usually quiet, and the late evening opening is calm after a long day of walking.
A combined ticket adds the Modern Collection and temporary shows; the garden paths between buildings are open to all.
The Founder's Collection follows a clear route. Start with Egyptian sculpture and Mesopotamian pieces, then the rooms of Islamic tiles, carpets and glass, and Chinese and Japanese art. The European wing holds paintings by Rembrandt, Rubens and Turner, French furniture and decorative arts. The closing room of Lalique jewels and glass is a highlight for many. Afterwards, follow the garden paths to the Modern Collection.
The museum is in Avenidas Novas near Praça de Espanha, north of the centre; the metro stops close by and buses pass.
Step-free accessThe foundation says all its areas, and parts of the garden, have access and equipment for visitors with limited mobility: ramps in the main building, lifts and stairlifts used with help from security staff, adapted toilets, and disabled parking.
It closes every Tuesday, as of Nov 2026. Next special hours: 24 December 2026: closed. On open days a combined ticket covers the Founder's Collection, the Modern Collection and temporary shows, and the garden paths between the buildings are open to all.
Yes, on some evenings. On Saturday, until 9:00 PM. These late hours are as of Nov 2026. A late visit is often calmer, since many other sights have closed by then, and the Lalique room of jewels and glass makes a fine finish to a day of walking.
On a typical open day the hours are 10:00 AM–6:00 PM, as of Nov 2026. The museum closes on one weekday and opens late on another, both shown in the hours box. Arriving soon after opening leaves time for the Founder's Collection, the garden and the Modern Collection.
In our plans: Day 7, “LX Factory & Calouste Gulbenkian Museum”. The museum sits north of the centre in Avenidas Novas, so it suits a half-day of its own, with a walk in the foundation's garden. It is also a calm choice on a rainy day.
