Leave time to wander the walls and sit on the terraces, not just to take in the view.
Opening time is usually the quietest, before tour groups climb the hill; late afternoon brings warm light over the river.
Some wall-walks and towers shut before the grounds, so do the ramparts first and save the gardens for the end.
Start on the main terrace by the old cannons, where the view sweeps from the river to the Baixa. Then cross into the castle proper and walk the ramparts between its towers. The small museum shows finds from the hill, and the archaeological site reveals the outlines of Moorish houses and older remains beneath them. Leave time for the pine-shaded gardens, where peacocks wander between the benches.
The castle crowns the hill above Alfama; walk up the cobbled lanes from the Baixa, or take the historic tram or a small bus.
Step-free accessThe castle describes a level paved route from the entrance to the eastern viewpoint, a ramp at the ticket office and museum entrance, an adapted toilet and wheelchairs to borrow; visitors with reduced mobility are asked to make contact first.
Entry is by ticket from the castle's own office or website, and its price list shows free entry for younger children, as of Oct 2026. Queues can form at busy times. Partner tickets and today's prices are in the Book box on this page.
Opening times shift through the year, and the hours box on this page gives this month's, as of Oct 2026. Some wall-walks and towers close before the main grounds, so do the ramparts first. Next special hours: 24 December 2026: closed. Arriving at opening usually means a calmer climb.
Many visitors allow about 2 h, as of Nov 2026. The ramparts and towers, the small museum, the archaeological site with its Moorish houses, the pine-shaded gardens and the terraces all take time, and the steep walk up from the Baixa adds more.
In our plans: Day 1, “Castelo de São Jorge & Belém Tower”. The castle crowns the hill above Alfama, so many visitors pair it with a slow walk down through its lanes, passing the cathedral on the way to the Baixa. A morning suits the climb.
Young children enter free, and young people and seniors pay a reduced price, as of Oct 2026. The castle asks for proof at the entrance for discounted and free tickets, so bring an identity document. Everyone else needs a standard ticket from the castle's own office or website.
Next stop: 5–7 min walk
