An early entry slot usually means a shorter wait and calmer rooms; weekends tend to be the busiest days.
Book an entry slot ahead, Lisboa Card included; on leaving, look for the carved rhino head below an outer turret.
Cross the short walkway to the bastion, where cannon openings look out over the river. Then climb the narrow spiral stair through the tower's rooms: the Governor's room, the King's room with its open loggia, the Audience room and the chapel, up to the roof terrace and its river views. On the way out, look for the rhino head carved below a turret on the outer wall.
The tower is on the Belém waterfront; from Jerónimos, walk west through the gardens and under the riverside road.
It is closed on Monday, as of Oct 2026. Next special hours: 25 December 2026: closed. On other days entry is booked for a chosen date and time, Lisboa Card included, so pick a slot ahead. The riverside gardens around it are open without a ticket.
Usual hours are 9:30 AM–5:30 PM on open days, with last entry at 5:00 PM, as of Oct 2026. The tower is small and the spiral stair narrow, so visitors go up in turns, and an early slot usually brings the shortest wait and calmer rooms.
Inside is compact and the stair is narrow, but the roof terrace and carved rooms reward the climb: the Governor's room, the King's room with its open loggia, the Audience room and the chapel. If tight spaces bother you, the view from the shore is a fine alternative.
In our plans: Day 1, “Castelo de São Jorge & Belém Tower”. The tower stands a short walk west of the Jerónimos Monastery through the waterfront gardens, so most visitors combine the two in one half-day in Belém. Allow time to walk between booked slots.
