Courtyards, treasury and Harem together make a long visit, so plan it as the main part of a morning.
Soon after opening usually means shorter lines; late autumn and winter weekdays tend to be calmer.
Consider the combined ticket, which adds the Harem and Hagia Irene to the main palace route.
Enter through the outer gate and pass the Byzantine church of Hagia Irene in the first courtyard. The Gate of Salutation leads to the second courtyard, with the domed council hall and the long palace kitchens. The Harem opens off this court. Further in, the third courtyard holds the treasury with its jewelled daggers and the chamber of holy relics. Finish in the fourth courtyard, where tiled pavilions and a marble terrace look out over the water.
At the far end of Sultanahmet, a short walk downhill from Hagia Sophia through the outer gardens.
A combined ticket covers the palace, the Harem and Hagia Irene, and separate tickets are sold for the Harem or Hagia Irene alone, as of Oct 2026. Tickets are sold at the palace's own ticket office. The Book box on this page shows partner tickets and current prices.
On a Wednesday the ticket office is usually open 9:00 AM–5:00 PM, with last entry at 5:00 PM. The palace is closed on Tuesday, as of Oct 2026. Holiday closures: Closed on the first day of Ramadan Bairam (Eid al-Fitr). Arriving soon after opening usually means shorter lines.
Many visitors allow about 3–4 h. The palace spreads over several courtyards, and the Harem adds its own separate route. The treasury and the chamber of holy relics often have lines of their own, and the marble terrace in the fourth courtyard invites a pause over the water.
A walk through the courtyards leads from ceremonial spaces to the Imperial Treasury, the palace kitchens and pavilions with views over the Bosphorus and the Golden Horn. The Harem, where the sultan's family lived, has its own route, and Hagia Irene, a Byzantine church, stands in the first courtyard.
The palace's ticket rules list free entry for young children, as of Oct 2026. Other visitors need a ticket, and the city museum card does not cover the Harem or Hagia Irene. The combined ticket includes both of them alongside the main palace route.
