The first hour after opening is typically quietest, before tour groups arrive; weekday afternoons can be calm.
Follow the walkways to the back for the two Medusa heads, passing the teardrop column on the way.
Steps lead down from the street into the cool hall, and raised walkways take you between the columns. Look for the teardrop column, carved with patterns that resemble eyes and tears. At the back, two Medusa heads serve as column bases, one on its side and one upside down. Art installations sometimes appear in the water, and the lighting changes slowly as you walk.
Across the road from Hagia Sophia at the edge of Sultanahmet Square, a short walk from the Blue Mosque.
Entry is by a standard daytime ticket, sold at the cistern's own entrance on the street and through its own site, as of Oct 2026. Lines can build up in summer, so buying ahead often helps. The Book box on this page shows partner tickets and current prices.
On a Tuesday it is usually open 9:00 AM–6:30 PM, and it opens every day of the week, as of Oct 2026. The first hour after opening is typically the quietest, before larger tour groups arrive, and a weekday late afternoon can also feel calmer underground.
Rows of marble columns rise from shallow water in a dim, cool hall built to store water for the Byzantine palace. Raised walkways lead to the back, where two columns rest on carved Medusa heads, and a column carved with teardrop shapes stands along the way.
In our plans: Day 1, “Hagia Sophia & Blue Mosque”. The cistern lies just across the road from Hagia Sophia in Sultanahmet, so it slots in easily between the old city's mosques and Topkapı Palace. The map on this page shows how close these sights stand to each other.
Next stop: 4–5 min walk
