Late afternoon, after the Grand Palace has closed, is often calmer, with softer light on the chedis; early morning is quiet too.
Choose trousers over shorts, which the temple does not accept, and walk the hall to the Buddha's inlaid feet.
Start in the hall of the Reclining Buddha and walk its full length to the feet, inlaid with mother-of-pearl scenes. Along the back wall, a row of bronze bowls takes small coins as offerings. Outside, look for the tall tiled chedis of the early kings, the cloister lined with seated Buddha images, the ordination hall and the stone guardian figures that once came from China as ship ballast.
Wat Pho is just south of the Grand Palace walls in the old royal quarter; walk over, or come by river boat, taxi or tuk-tuk.
The temple sells its own entry tickets at the gate, and its price list shows free entry for children under a set height, as of Oct 2026. Reserving ahead is rarely needed. Partner walking tours and current prices appear in the Book box on this page.
Wat Pho usually opens its gates 8:00 AM–7:30 PM daily, as of Oct 2026. It stays open later than the Grand Palace next door, so it fits well into an afternoon, and the courtyards around the chedis are often quieter once the palace crowds have gone.
The long reclining Buddha fills its own hall; walk along to the feet for the mother-of-pearl inlay. Around the courtyards stand the ordination hall, the library hall and clusters of tiled chedis. As of Oct 2026, the temple asks for polite dress, with trousers rather than shorts.
Wat Pho lies in the old city just south of the Grand Palace, an easy walk between the two. River boats and buses serve the area, and a small ferry crosses to Wat Arun; the map on this page shows the closest stop.
