A layover in Bangkok can be one compact walk through the old royal quarter, with the airport train and the metro there and back. You begin at Wat Pho and the Grand Palace, cross to Khao San Road and end at the Giant Swing and the Golden Mount. Clothes that meet the temples' dress rules make the day easier.

Rattanakosin is the royal old town on the east bank of the Chao Phraya, where the Grand Palace, Wat Pho and the Golden Mount stand within a short distance of each other. Banglamphu, just to the north, is a lively district of guesthouses, canal-side lanes and the Khao San Road area. It is a good base for temples and museums, with river boats as the main way to move around.

Temples
Temples are usually open to visitors, though inner shrines are often reserved for worshippers. Visitors are usually asked to dress modestly, with shoulders and knees covered, and to take their shoes off where asked, usually before prayer halls. Visitors usually keep their voices down and a respectful distance from altars and offerings, and photographing people praying usually needs their permission first. Rules can vary, so please follow any instructions and ask the staff on arrival.

Cards are usually accepted at hotels, shopping malls and larger restaurants. Street food stalls, markets and small shops typically prefer cash, so carry some small notes.
ATMs run by banks are usually cheaper than stand-alone machines, though many banks also charge foreign cards a fee. If asked, choose to be charged in Thai Baht. Your own bank may also charge a foreign-use fee. Check with your bank before you go.
Tipping is not expected in Thailand, but a small tip is usually appreciated. Around THB 20 to 50 for good service is typical, as of October 2026.

Quick answers to common questions.
The layover plan is one walk through the old royal quarter: Wat Pho, the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew, the National Museum Bangkok, Khao San Road, the Giant Swing and the Golden Mount, in that order. The palace has a last entry in the afternoon, and both the palace and Wat Pho ask visitors to dress modestly, so plan your clothes before you land. As of 19 Oct 2026.
The layover walk still fits: Wat Pho, the Grand Palace, the National Museum Bangkok, Khao San Road, the Giant Swing and the Golden Mount, or follow the one-day plan for more. Leave time for the return: Suvarnabhumi is usually about 31 to 74 minutes from the city, plus the wait for the train and the checks at the airport. As of 21 Oct 2026.
