A highlights route can be quick, but the collection rewards a much longer wander if you have the energy.
Early slots are typically the calmest, especially in the Gallery of Honour; weekdays outside school holidays tend to be quieter.
Even with a Museumkaart you still reserve a start time online; after the galleries, the surrounding museum gardens make a pleasant finish.
Head first to the Gallery of Honour on the upper floor, lined with Golden Age masterpieces. At its end hangs Rembrandt's Night Watch. Nearby, look for Vermeer's Milkmaid and the dollhouses in their cabinet rooms. Then explore the model ships, weapons and Delftware on the lower floors, peek into the old library, and end in the gardens around the building.
The museum anchors the north end of Museumplein, a short walk south of Leidseplein; trams stop right by the building.
Step-free accessThe museum lists itself as wheelchair and mobility scooter accessible, with lifts on all floors and an accessibility map at the information desk.
Every visit to the Rijksmuseum needs a start time booked online, as of Oct 2026. Holders of a Museumkaart reserve a slot as well, so nobody simply walks in. The Book box on this page shows partner tickets and current prices, including some guided tours.
The museum opens every day of the week, and a usual day runs 9:00 AM–5:00 PM, as of Oct 2026. The hours box lists each day. Since every visit needs a booked start time, choosing an early slot leaves the most room for the galleries before closing.
Many visitors allow about 1 h, as of Nov 2026. A highlights route covers the famous rooms fairly quickly, while Dutch history and the decorative arts spread over several floors can fill far longer. Many people pick a few galleries rather than trying to see everything.
Golden Age paintings, including Rembrandt's Night Watch and Vermeer's Milkmaid, hang alongside ship models, silver, costume and objects that trace the story of the Netherlands across several floors. Lifts reach every floor, as of Oct 2026. A grand old library and the gardens outside round off the visit.
Children and teenagers go free, as of Oct 2026, while adults pay for entry. Young visitors still need a booked start time, and the museum's site gives the exact age limit. Partner tickets for adults, with current prices, appear in the Book box on this page.
