Mornings are usually calmer and animals often more active; indoor houses make it workable on a grey day.
A zoo ticket already includes both the aquarium and planetarium, and Micropia or the Groote Museum on the same grounds can be added to it.
Walk past the flamingo pond near the entrance, then visit the African savanna and the big cats. The old aquarium building shows Dutch canal life and coral reefs. Step into the butterfly pavilion and the reptile and insect houses on cooler days. The planetarium offers short shows, and the garden paths link monumental buildings. Check the day's programme for talks and feeding moments.
Artis is in the leafy Plantage district east of the old centre, a short walk from Waterlooplein; trams stop at the gate.
Step-free accessARTIS says most areas of the zoo are accessible by wheelchair or mobility scooter. It has 20 wheelchairs to borrow (small coin deposit) and one mobility scooter to reserve. Some areas are less accessible, including the lion lookout terrace, the climbing rocks near the jaguar habitat and the steep path to the sea lion enclosure.
